Acai bowls are one of my favorite things to make. Maybe it’s because they are so pretty, or maybe because I know they are so slam-packed with nutrients, but I really, really enjoying throwing these together.
In Brazil, they call acai “the beauty berry.” It started out as a trendy thing in the United States because all of the Brazilian models were seen eating acai bowls, and I mean, who doesn’t want to look like Alessandra Ambrosio? She could say she eats tar for breakfast and millions of people would do the same.
Regardless, there’s a reason this fruit is so popular with some of the most beautiful people in the world. It’s full of amino acids, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids, making it a great weapon for combating free-radical damage, the aging process, and increasing the immune system, hair, nails, skin luster, and for boosting the metabolism.
The great thing about acai bowls is that you can make them any way you’d like with a huge variety of toppings. Acai used to be pretty hard to find, but now, you can usually find the frozen puree in most freezer sections of grocery stores. Make sure you choose the unsweetened version. The recipe below is how we enjoy our bowls, but feel free to play around with this recipe, and throw in your favorite ingredients. Let us know what we might be missing out on in the comments!
- 1 pack of unsweetened acai puree
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 cup frozen berries
- 1 scoop plant-based protein (optional)
- 1/4 cup non-dairy milk, water, or coconut water (add a little more if you don’t want it as thick)
- 1 squirt liquid stevia
- optional toppings – fresh fruit, shredded coconut, raw cacao nibs, raw hemp seeds
- Blend everything but the toppings in a high-speed blender. It’ll seem too thick, but it’s supposed to be that way. It gives it more of an ice cream texture.
- Top with your favorite toppings.
